How It Started
Maria's journey into dance education didn't follow the typical
path. It started with her mother. In 2008, Maria watched her
mother struggle after retirement — lost motivation, less
social connection, declining physical confidence. So she
taught her basic salsa steps on a whim. The change was
remarkable. Her mother didn't just learn to dance. She became
more confident, more mobile, more engaged with life.
That moment shifted something in Maria. She realized dance
wasn't just about movement or music. It was about
transformation. And if it could work for her mother, it could
work for thousands of other people in the same situation. So
she formalized her training.
Education & Credentials
In 2011, Maria earned her degree in Physical Education from
the University of Madeira. She didn't stop there. She
completed specialized training in adult-centered dance
pedagogy at the Instituto Superior de Educação Física in
Lisbon, then pursued additional certifications in senior
fitness and health coaching. Her education combined exercise
science with practical teaching methodology — the theory
behind why dancing works, plus the actual skills to teach it
well.
Building the Field
Throughout the 2010s, Maria established herself in Funchal's
dance community. The Golden Steps program she launched in 2015
filled a real gap. There weren't programs designed for adults
over 45 who'd never danced before. Most classes assumed you
already had basic skills. Maria's program started from zero
and built up gradually. By 2018, her success in Funchal led
her to expand to Leiria. She didn't just open another studio —
she developed curriculum standards that other schools could
adopt and maintain quality with.
What drives Maria most isn't the accolades. It's the stories.
The woman who told her she finally felt confident at social
events. The man whose doctor said his balance and
cardiovascular fitness had improved dramatically. The couples
who've danced together for years now and credit it with
strengthening their relationship. Those transformations —
they're what keep her focused on making dance accessible to
everyone, regardless of age or prior experience.
